Four Rivers

Riverside — © Andrea Orioli at 1x.com

Rumi says …
A lover has four streams inside,
of water, wine, honey, and milk
I know, for my love is four rivers.
I have swum their currents,
rested and slept on her shores.

On the breasts banking the river colostrum
mauve founts spray drops of ambrosial light
and starbursts curdle in the milky way.

The river melliflu rolls and sings
in her humming wax throat,
pistil lips pollinated by a twilight kiss
bear my swelling nightfall sting
and whisper blossoms in the honey melon morn.

Succulent banks of the river vulva,
grooved channel of wine where lips
squeeze grapes and drip their juice
on sleeping oysters.

From the banks of the river virga,
her eyes watch like fruit hanging
from plum trees planted in a gentle rain,
plums that know the minutiae
and minuets of morning dew,
the penetralia of upstream waters,
the fate of the moon flicked raindrops that fill
my begging bowl with their silver glint.

I will be away for a few days. Vacation time. My rivers and me are going to look for a fine summer spot to do some serious skinny dipping … or plump plum plucking ... or some such fun. I'll see you all on my return.

  1. This is a masterpiece, Lorenzo. I swoon @ your words, imagery, poetic-ness.

  2. Lorenzo, do I dare enter this room without blushing? :)

How very lovely and sensual this is. And the timing is fitting for me and mine, as I have just posted about our Wedding Plum tree, planted during our daughter's wedding ceremony one year ago. There is something about plums, I guess, in the rain.

Ahh love. Ahhh sweet plums. How rich is the world and its symbols and delights.

  3. ...ahhh...the god of the four eternal rivers has whispered...but not to me...

  4. Terresa: I definitely like swooning! Thanks for that. I hope you are continuing your blissful stay at the cabin lodge.

Ruth: I have not seen the post yet, but the plum tree is my very next stop. I remember reading the lovely post of a year ago on the wedding. I was so taken by the simple but rich rite of planting a plum tree in the rain that I used that image in this poem.

BonnieWho says the whisper was not for you? Come to think of it, by the very definition of the term, I would say that if you can hear a whisper, it was meant for your ear.

  9. Bon voiage than,to you and your rivers,:) have a pleasant journey to the seas of life,a small something to say goodbye and see you after your vacation ....

    Sea Fever

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
    Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
    To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

  11. Talk about a seductive piece of poetry. I'm with Ruth, almost "blushing". Your imagery is impressive.

I read it twice and will read again after the hot flash subsides.

  13. I'm with Ruth on this one, Lorenzo, reluctant to enter the room without blushing. I will, nonetheless, because great art needs to saluted whenever and wherever it is found. I salute you, my friend. Have a great holiday!

  21. Lorenzo,
Welcome home ( "saw" you at Ruth's place.

and I just wanted to say that I so love that Spanish tradition of inviting everyone to a feast for your birthday. To break bread with your loved ones, to take the action to bring love in. To know that this is obviously what you would want , and want to give. I am going to do this on my next birthday. Thank you.
